Where can I buy equipment for Chinese brush painting?

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

I recently bought a book called "Guide to Chinese brush painting" by Zheng Zhonghua and I have no idea where I can buy the resources I need such as; Xuanzhi paper, some brushes, some ink*, an inkstone, some paint trays and the "Mali" paints by Shanghai Mali Pigment. Please answer, any shops you know of on the Isle of Wight, Swindon or Cirencester or internet shops please!

*In this book they recommended "Yidege" and "Caosugong" but I have no clue where to get them.
I have "Googled" it haha
Thanks:)

There’s a Chinese Brush Painters Society in the UK with some suppliers listed on its website, there are only a few, so there is unlikely to be anything in your area, so it looks as if you will need to order online.

The section on the website ‘getting started’ explains the different types of materials:

Chinese Brush Painting with Kwan Jung

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

chinese painting brush Learn More: http://ccpvideos.com/sku/KJ1d Capture the essence of complex subjects in just a few strokes with Chinese brush painting. This traditional method requires patience and practice, but you’ll get a huge head start in master painter Kwan Jung’s DVD workshop. You’ll build discipline and design skills as you render six classic subjects in ink and paint.

Kwan Jung covers the essential skills, from grinding ink to gripping the brush. First you’ll learn the 10 basic strokes as you paint a prawn. Then you’ll add movement and gesture to your repertoire as Jung demonstrates bamboo and bird forms. He varies brush width within each stroke, allowing him to paint quickly and judiciously.

Jung adds colorful accents with acrylics and watercolors. You’ll mix these media with ink to subtly shift hues as you paint hibiscus, horses, and a cowboy. The video repeats critical strokes so you can watch Jung’s brushwork from multiple angles.

Learn classical techniques to enhance your current art in Chinese Brush Painting with Kwan Jung.

Painting Plum Blossom Chinese Hanging Scroll with Rooster Feather Brush

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

chinese painting brush Available on DVD now! http://www.blueheronarts.com/product_info.php?products_id=439
This plum blossom painting conclude the “Four Gentlemen” hanging scroll series. I have tried very hard to take advantage of the green screen trick that I have just learned to give the viewer some idea about spirit of plum blossoms which bloom in the snow. I found theses nice pictures on the internet AFTER I have done the painting and in the video editing process to make it look like I was painting in front of those beautiful flowers instead of the green screen. I wish it helps you to get the essence of Chinese plum blossom painting. Let me know what do you think.

The brush that I used for this plum painting is made of rooster feather. It worked out just as I expected – to loosen up control over details and concentrate on the oneness of all strokes and the wholesome image in my mind. I love the rich texture generated by dry feather brush on the trunk and the bouncing twigs produced by sensitive feather tip.

How to make a paint brush

Thursday, July 5th, 2012

chinese painting brush Here is a step by step video showing how to make a home made paint brush. If you enjoy painting (art painting, that is), then you may appreciate making your own brushes to suit your artistic needs. I used horse hair for the brush fibers, and a stick from my backyard for the handle. The horse hair came from my sister’s horses. You can make any type of brush you want using this technique. By the way, I just made up this technique, so don’t think I am an expert. I am creating these brushes as Christmas presents for an art kit that I am making for my sister’s kids.

It only takes about ten minutes to make a brush, so get started. By the way, if you don’t know of any horses that needed a trimming, you can use dog hair, cat hair, or human hair for the brush fiber. You could probably go to your local pet store and ask for hair from some of the animals.
